On Maui, Hawaiian Islands.
An almost otherwordly plant that grows only on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano on Maui. A fantastic example of adaptation to a bizarre set of harsh conditions…freezing temperatures at night, hot temps and harsh sun during the day, high winds, and dry volcanic cinder for soil. Through it all, these plants can live more than 50 years and grow to be several feet tall.
A good example of nature’s way to remind us to be resilient, tough, and adaptable, no matter the conditions you find yourself in. But do so with a velvety veneer that attracts the respectful but repels the pestilent.
