Three escalators at the San Diego Convention Center.
Photos of escalators without people on them tell no story…are they going up? are they going down? are they on at all? There’s no telling. If at least one person was on at least one of them, then you could tell something about the situation, based on which way the person is facing. But in the freezing of motion, which any photo inherently produces, and with the absence of “users,” the story is about the escalator itself, not about what it’s doing.
Who are you,
what’s your story,
when you stop moving,
when you’re in the absence of others?
