Mission Airy

In Santa Barbara, California

Two crosses adorn the Old Mission Santa Barbara with the sky and what I think may be the Santa Ynez mountains in the background. Founded in 1786, the tenth of the 21 California missions is the only one to be continuously under the guidance of Franciscan friars since its founding.

You can walk to the mission from the main beachfront area where some of the oceanside hotels are. It’s about a 3-mile walk with the Santa Barbara Courthouse about halfway there, which is quite an interesting and photogenic architectural sightseeing attraction in and of itself. I’ll be sure to post some photos of that gem too, so you can see what I mean.

I know it sounds a bit odd to suggest leaving the beach to take a super-long walk to check out an old courthouse and then an old church, but it actually is a good way to spend a day.
