Tres Campanas

In San Luis Obispo, California

At the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. This mission, founded in 1772, was the fifth of the 21 California missions. It sits in the middle of the “downtown” area of San Luis Obispo, a college town (home to California Polytechnic State University, aka Cal Poly) of about 50,000 people.

This pavilion honors and showcases three bells named, from left to right, Joy, Glory, and Sorrow. It’s hard to find the story of those three bells, but it seems that Joy and Glory were cast in Lima, Peru and placed in service at the mission in 1820, while Sorrow was made in San Francisco in 1877.

I think it’s interesting that these missions (and perhaps all churches?) name their bells.
