In San Francisco, California

Closeup in a lily pond at Golden Gate Park. Usually, the thought of stagnation comes with a negative connotation; but it seems essential for a lily pond. There must be a reason that ponds are most likely to be home to water lilies rather than a river, lake, or ocean.

“Oh, restless the river, restless the sea,
Where the great ships go, and the dead men be!
The lily-pond giveth but peace to me.”

The final stanza of “The Lily Pond” by Virna Sheard
